The new take-down version of our African Shooting Sticks is
designed to fit into any airline approved gun case. Now you can
use the same set of sticks to hunt kudu in the Summer, Whitetails
in the Fall and Turkeys from a blind in the Spring (more on that
later). There is a reason why every African
PH brings a set of these along for the client; because they are
so easy to use and effective. We have improved upon the very
basic "3 sticks bound with inner
tube" with our Take-Down version which combines the finest raw
materials available with unmatched craftsmanship.
Several years ago we began making the best one piece African
Shooting sticks on the market. You have told us how we helped
you make very difficult shots on all manner of game around the
globe and that is the most rewarding part of this endeavor. You
also told us how difficult our one piece models were to travel
with since they are almost 6' long. While we would have liked
to offer a take-down version sooner, we did not want to compromise
our unyielding standards in the process. More importantly we
wanted the connector to increase the rigidity and strength of
them.
We developed dozens of take-down connector prototypes over the
years but for one reason or another they did not meet our criteria.
We wanted them to have a very strong, positive locking system
and be very easy to put together/take apart with bare hands.
We could have launched a simple "wood into pipe gravity version" several
years ago but did not think that approach would be consistent
with the level of quality and innovation you have come to expect
from all of our other safari inspired creations.
Well, the wait is finally over as our new Take-Down
version is now available. The heart of this new model is a patent
pending, two piece aluminum take-down connector that was designed
by a specialty fittings engineer to have three points of contact
for tremendous strength. This innovative design screws together
quickly and features a rubber gasket that compresses with the
last turn to prevent them from vibrating loose when you are traveling
cross country with them in the back of a safari vehicle.
Each connector is milled from a solid piece of high strength,
light weight Aluminum bar stock and is then sand blasted to a
non-reflective, matte finish. The tolerance between the two pieces
of the connector is similar to what you would find on a take-down
rifle. The seam between the connector pieces would almost be
impossible to feel if we did not put a small micro-bevel on the
two (otherwise sharp) edges that are exposed when the sticks
are taken apart.
The connectors are the same diameter as the wood to
provide a uniform thickness from top to bottom. We turn the
last 4 inches of the shafts down to a ½" so they fit
inside the connectors and use a hydraulic press that generates
over four hundred pounds of pressure to compress the shafts into
the connectors for a permanent seal.
We
offer two grades which, while constructed exactly alike, utilize
different raw materials.
The
zebra tops take you back to the Dark Continent regardless of
the quarry stalked. When you combine the beauty of the
striking black and white hide with the toughness of Hickory
it makes for an unbeatable combination.
Hickory
is 2-3 times stronger and much more rigid than oak which makes
it the natural choice for this application. There
is a reason why a Hickory switch was the disciplinarian’s
tool of choice in days gone by. Anyone who has ever been
on the receiving end of a piece of this incredibly tough exotic
American hardwood can attest to its tremendous resilience. We
put a medium tone brown stain on this blonde hardwood to make
sure it blends in with your surroundings.
The
sticks measure 70" when assembled and each section is 36" when
taken apart. Unscrew them and you can use the top portion for
shots from the kneeling or sitting position. Each set comes with
three extra large screws with oversized, hexagonal heads that
you can screw into the top part of the connector for an airtight
seal to keep the cavity and threads free of dirt and debris.
If for some reason you do need to clean them out, a .375 or .416
brass bore brush works great.
Using your African Shooting Sticks is very simple and they do
not require any tools to assemble. First post the shorter leg
(the one with the rubber cap on top) out front in line with where
you want to point the rifle. Then grasp the two remaining legs
and post them at the desired height. This action automatically
aligns the two hide covered tops into a perfect "V" rest for
your rifle's fore end. While this process is a bit awkward to
explain, it is effortless to accomplish in the field. Once you
familiarize yourself with them, set-up takes seconds and they
expand your effective range considerably.
Metal tips at the base
of each stick are added for extra stability. |
Keep in mind that our African Shooting Sticks feature padded
tops. The standard black rubber tops (Gold Grade) or leather
(Platinum Grade) are offered to avoid Fish and Game inspection
delays when travelling internationally. Many of you have told
us how you scratched up your very expensive rifles' fore end
using the unpadded, coarse sticks provided by your African outfitter
so this is a very important issue to consider. Our Platinum Grade
version includes an extra set of exotic antelope tops, (Black
Wildebeast, Fallow Deer and Black Buck). As an option we also
offer zebra skin or cape buffalo tops that take you
back to the Dark Continent regardless of the quarry stalked and
will protect your stock from unnecessary "beauty
marks".
The Platinum version comes complete with a high quality,
heavy duty Red Oxx Carrying Case in their signature safari green
color.
The
case is adorned with our eye catching logo and web-site address.
The case is designed to keep them from coming into contact with
your rifle during air transportation.
We spared no expense in developing our new Platinum take-down
African Shooting Sticks. We hope you enjoy using them as much
as we enjoy making them. If you are planning a trip to the Dark
Continent, get a set of these so you can practice with them before
your trip and also to relive the excitement of the hunt long
after you return home.
Thank you for your support and please continue to share your
adventures with us.
