Give your prized firearm the best seat in the house with our custom-made gun rack. We combine a base of African Yellow Wood with trophy sized Ivory Warthog tusks that are big enough to cradle even the largest double rifles to create a beautiful and functional conversation piece. Conditions must be ideal for Warthog Tusks to grow this large as less than one in a hundred will sport a set like these. These are huge Ivory Tusks that measure 8-9” around the curve and weigh approximately a ½ pound each! This is after we cut them down 4”-5” to provide a solid channel to fill with our industrial strength setting compound. We set case hardened screws into this compound to ensure your firearm will be securely supported.
Each tusk takes roughly four hours to clean, polish, fill with compound and prepare for mounting. The flat bottom part of the tusk is where the smaller lower tusk whets against it to keep it razor sharp for protection against predators. Warthogs have maimed leopards and even lions with these impressive weapons that can protrude up to ten inches from their mouth. All of our Ivory Warthog Tusks are secured during Government authorized cull hunts in South Africa and are legally imported through US Customs. The Yellow Wood base is indigenous to South Africa and is the only tree the endangered Cape Parrot uses for nesting. For that reason, these trees are given protected status. When the trees die and are no longer used by the parrots, a select few loggers licensed by the Government are allowed to harvest them. We purchase our lumber from a sawmill in South Africa that processes this beautiful wood from the loggers. The random sized pieces we use are approximately ¾” thick. This extremely dense wood features beautiful pale oranges and yellows accented with beige highlights. How much character the wood displays depends on what part of the tree your particular piece came from and how long it has been seasoned by the elements. Cleaner pieces typically come from the middle of the tree. More rustic pieces usually come from the outer portion and can contain small remnants of the bark, hairline cracks and open knots from being dried in the equatorial sun. Even by exotic wood standards, African Yellow Wood exhibits a stunning, naturally dramatic appearance. These random shaped Gun Racks measure approximately 40-50” wide and 8-14” tall. Mounting these racks is easy as the back features standard recessed hanger brackets that allow for flush mounting using the #6 round head screws provided. We only recommend mounting this piece into wood or wood studs. |
