Entry Level African Shooting Sticks

Our new “Entry Level” African Shooting Sticks are designed to fit into an airline approved guncase and offer unmatched value. In the past, we had only offered premium products, but after hearing about how an inferior set of Shooting Sticks cost a (now converted) customer his Dagga Boy, we felt compelled to jump into the ring. We would never put our name on anything that would not set the standard for that particular product and this new offering is no exception.

Over the years we have heard many stories similar to the one above from customers who have had a competitive brand of Shooting Sticks failed at the worst possible moment. The incident referenced above was typical, his sticks dropped a leg when his PH was setting them up and the herd was off on the afternoon of the last day and Damian from Longview, TX went home empty handed.

The overwhelming majority of these stories revolve around a “gravity type” connector dropping a wooden leg or a set of aluminumones with a flimsy, stamped metal or plastic adjustment mechanism failing to hold at the worst possible moment. With the above in mind, we began experimenting with a connector that we could use to make the very best “Entry Level” take-down shooting sticks on the market.

What we came up with is a very simple male and female friction-fit connector that will not come apart unintentionally. The two sections fit together tightly and hold the legs firmly in place without any wobble. If you are trying to visualize how this works, it is very similar to what they use to attach two sections of a take-down fishing pole together except it is much stronger. Simply twist and pull when you want to take them apart. You can use the top section alone for shots from the kneeling or sitting position. With a little practice, you will have all three legs apart in under a minute. The sticks measure 70” when assembled and the top and bottom sections are 36” when taken apart. The versatility we build into our shooting sticks provides you with two complete sets you can hunt with year-round.

Each connector component is made out of copper. The top or male portion of the connector has a reinforced, extra thick pointed tip to ensure you can post it in the hardest soil when using them from the sitting or kneeling position. We do not sandblast or paint the connectors, we simply leave them in the raw state and let the natural oxidation process associated with copper dull them over time.

While you can drive a truck over our precision milled, solid aircraft aluminum “Premium” connector (and we have) without damaging it, these would not stand up to that kind of abuse. They also are not as rigid as our “Premium” connector because that one is precision milled with an unsurpassed, three points of contact for unmatched stability. Having said that, we took apart every popular brand of wooden and aluminum shafted Shooting Sticks on the market and are confident these will out-perform all of them. Please go to our Entry Level FAQ’s to learn more about the advantages they offer.

We machine sand every shaft and then spray one coat of high quality polyurethane on them to protect them from the elements. The outside diameter is 5/8” or .625” on the top section of the male connector and the wooden shafts. The outside diameter of the female connector and the bottom wooden shafts are slightly larger than the tops at .725”as the tops fit or “nest” inside the bottoms. We turn the last few inches of the top and bottom wooden shafts down so they fit inside the copper connectors for a flush fit. To strengthen the integrity of the connector, the male portion is solid (wood or copper) for five out of the six inches of its length. We designed them so it is impossible to push them in too far and you simply push the tops down to the compression marks (circular indentations) that permanently affix the male portion of the copper connector onto the wooden tenon. We place noise suppression bumpers where the two connectors meet to eliminate the “dinner bell” noise made by the legs of all-aluminum models clanking together.

Available Wood Types

We offer two kiln dried domestic hardwoods to give you a nice selection to choose from.

Hickory is the most rigid domestic wood available and is a great choice for this application. This is the same species they make axe handles out of so you know it is extremely tough. We spray a medium brown polyurethane stain on this blonde colored wood to make sure it blends in with your surroundings. Hickory costs you a bit more as it is more difficult to turn and not as readily available as Oak but it is worth every penny.

Red Oak is the most popular flooring species in the country and readily available. While not as rigid as Hickory, it is a nice looking wood that will provide good service. We spray a medium brown polyurethane stain on this light red wood to make sure it blends in with your surroundings.

All our Shooting Sticks come with rubber or leather tops to protect your rifles’ fore end. They also come with a case but only the Hickory and Walnut models come with the heavy duty canvas version that will really help protect your rifle in the event the two come into contact with each other in your airline approved case during air transportation.

"The African Shooting Sticks from Sporting Wood Creations are the best made.  They are extremely steady, well conceived and executed, with unique features not found on sticks from other makers.  Practice with shooting sticks is essential, and hunting with the set you own and with which you have practiced is common sense --these break down and fit in the travel case with my rifles.  We recommend Sporting Wood Creations' shooting sticks to all of our clients."
--George Sandmann, President, Empire Rifles

Your African Shooting Sticks are very simple to use. First, grasp the two legs that have the black bumpers on them and post the shorter leg (the one without the tops used for padding) out front, in line with where you want to point the rifle. Once you plant the front leg, pull back evenly on the other two legs to form the “V” for your rifle’s fore end. Once you familiarize yourself with them, set-up takes just seconds and they expand your effective range considerably. More detailed instructions accompany each set.

We hope you enjoy using them as much as we enjoy putting them in your hands!
